Tipton Associates, A Professional Architectural Corporation, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is the present day organization of a firm that was founded in 1879 by Benjamin H. Goodman working predominantly on Churches and residences during the early years of the firm.
In 1924, Robert H. Goodman, Ben Goodman’s son, joined the firm, expanding the practice into commercial design. To reflect this change, the firm was renamed Ben Goodman & Son. Some of their noted projects include:
- LSU’s Peabody Hall which was repaired and renovated after a fire in 1981
- The Protestant Orphanage, located in downtown Baton Rouge, which has been converted into apartments
- The Dr. Pepper Factory & Office Building on Jefferson Highway
- The Leslie Theater, located in Denham Springs, which is now an antique shop in Denham Springs’ renowned antique district
In 1932, W.J. Miller joined the firm, and once again the name was changed – it became Goodman & Miller. During this time period, the firm expanded to include federal government projects. Some of the projects completed during this time include:
- The Varsity Theater on Highland Road which has been converted into The Chimes, a well-known Baton Rouge restaurant and bar
- East Baton Rouge Court House Completion and Renovation
- Lambda Chi Fraternity House, LSU Campus
- Old State Capitol Building Renovations

| When T. Clayton Smith joined the firm in 1957, the firm was renamed Miller, Smith & Associates. The firm once again expanded its practice to include the educational, local and state government arenas. During this time, they worked on projects including: |
- Laurel Lea Baptist Church on Starring Lane
- Robert E. Lee High School on Lee Drive

In 1973, Mr. Miller retired and the firm became known as Smith & Champagne, Incorporated. Some projects completed during this time period include: |
- Parkview Baptist Church
- Brusly High School in Brusly, LA
- Godchaux High in Reserve, LA

During the 1990s, the firm went through some more changes. In 1995, it became known as STBP Architects to signify the four partners of the firm – T. Clayton Smith, Ken Tipton, Carlton Parker, and Lionel Bailey. Projects inclue: |

2003 – The firm enters into its 124th consecutive year of practicing architecture.
2003 – The firm suffered the loss of one of its leaders, T. Clayton Smith and was restructured with Kenneth Tipton Jr. assuming the leadership role. |

Today, under the leadership of Ken Tipton, Tipton Associates APAC enjoys a place of respect and prestige in the regional business and architectural community. The firm has won numerous awards from its peers in the American Institute of Architects, as well as from development, community, and construction organizations.
While Tipton Associates has a 120-year legacy of schools, churches, public buildings, university facilities, medical buildings and businesses, it remains a firm fixed on a vision of providing quality designs and relationships for its clients.
